At our construction safety group, we see many different types of workplace injuries. Overexertion by lifting items that are just too heavy causes 36% of workplace injuries.1 Back pain, shoulder injuries, and neck problems are caused by improperly lifting bulky or heavy items. While you should have learned proper lifting techniques and other construction safety tips in your OSHA or safety training classes, we can all get a little rusty. Here’s a refresher on proper lifting techniques.
Getting Ready to Lift Heavy Items
Before you even start lifting the items that need to be moved, make sure you’re starting on the right foot. This means looking first to determine if it’s something you can lift. Items that weigh more than 50 pounds or are unwieldy carry higher risks of injury and should be handled with equipment rather than lifting.1 For items that can’t be lifted by one person, use other techniques to handle them:
- Teamwork to lift
- Suction devices
- Mechanical lifts
How to Lift Properly
If you’ve determined that the item is something you can lift, make sure that you’re using the proper posture. Follow OSHA’s tips for lifting when you’re ready to move heavy items.2 Follow posture tips for proper lifting techniques:
- Face the item with your head upright and facing forward.
- When bending, do not bend too far, no more than 20 degrees from standing straight.
- Keep shoulders relaxed and slightly bend your knees.
- Carry items comfortably in front of the torso, not above the shoulders or below the waist.
